Uncover and assess preserved abilities in order to develop a person-centered care plan for persons with moderate to severe dementia and related disorders.
The Person-Centered Montessori Abilities System® (PCMAS) represents a different approach from the typical “mental status exam.” For the most part, these exams serve either to diagnose dementia or to classify an individual in terms of the stage of the progression of dementia. For care partners, the information provided by a single “score” does not provide much actionable information. In addition, that score may look very different between different people. They also do not allow any assistance, so we never find out how much help someone may need in order to do something for themselves. Such information is critical in creating plans of care.
